Handling the DVD / Optical Media
|
Keeping a DVD clean is the most important step towards maintaining its playability. Well maintained DVDs are expected to last over 100 years, ensuring a lifetime of use. Here are some ideas to remember when handling DVDs:
- Always wash your hands before you open the DVD and handle the Disc
- Using your thumb press the center spindle and pop the DVD out while lifting the outer edge gently with one finger. Do not force the DVD from its case.
- Hold the DVD by the edges only -- avoid touching the optical media.
- Gently turn the DVD over and inspect it for clarity. It should be scratch and debris-free.
- Insert the DVD into your player holding it by the edges and center only; never hold the DVD by the recorded media/mirror area as this may leave oil, dirt andscratches on your disc which can be transfered to the optical reader in your DVD player.
- Return the DVD to the case and store it in the case upright at all times. Do not place any heavy objects on the case or bend the case.

If your DVD does not play correctly, here are some ideas that may help:
|
The DVD may not be compatible with your laptop/desktop computer for any number of reasons.
Load it into
another DVD player, a PC or Mac, or other playing device before determining it is faulty.
If it plays, then the DVD is okay.
Do not handle the DVD by the optical media (mirror/non-artwork) side. Inspect this side for dirt or smudges or deep scratches. Any of these can cause the DVD to skip, stall or refuse to load in your DVD Player or computer. If it is dirty; apply a few drops of clean water and using a clean, lint-free towel, gently wipe it from the center of the disk straight out toward the edge. Never clean by rubbing in a circle around the DVD.
Scratches cannot be easily removed without damaging the optical media/video. Please handle with care.
